Jurors ended their first day of deliberations in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's personal doctor Friday without reaching a verdict.
The jury of seven men and five women spent 6 hours and 8 minutes considering the evidence in the jury room. They will resume deliberations Monday.
The case of People vs. Conrad Murray was submitted to the jury discount jerseys Thursday after 22 days of testimony from 33 witnesses for the prosecution and 16 for the defense. Jurors have with them in deliberations the notes they took during the trial and most of the more than 340 exhibits in the case.
Michael Jackson died at age 50 in June 2009 of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol. Murray, 58, a cardiologist who told police he administered propofol to Jackson for two months to treat insomnia, was charged with a single count of involuntary manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors say Murray caused Jackson's death through criminal cheap nhl jerseys negligence. He practiced medicine far below the professional "standard of care" in using the anesthetic for insomnia and doing it in a home setting without proper monitoring and resuscitation equipment, prosecutor David Walgren told the jury in his closing argument Thursday. Murray also was negligent in delaying a call to 911 for 20 minutes and in failing to tell rescue personnel he had given propofol, Walgren said.
Murray's defense lawyers said Jackson caused his own death, swallowing nba jerseys cheap sedative pills and injecting himself with propofol when the doctor wasn't looking. Murray's defenders blamed the promoters of Jackson's pending London comeback concerts for putting unbearable pressure on Jackson. And they blamed Jackson's dermatologist for allegedly addicting him to the painkiller Demerol, which can cause insomnia as a symptom of withdrawal.
The jurors were provided with highlighter pens and blank request forms NFL Jerseys Cheap when they entered the deliberation room Friday morning. They made no requests to Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor to have testimony read back. They sent the judge no questions on legal issues.
Three buzzes from the jury room sounding in the courtroom will cheap nfl jerseys mean a verdict has been reached, but jurors sent only signals of two buzzes, meaning they wanted to take a break, have lunch or go home for the day.
Outside the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, 25 Michael Jackson fans and four Conrad Murray fans waved opposing signs for news media cameras. Jackson fans chanted, "Guilty! Guilty!"
Patti North, a Northridge, Calif., administrative assistant and a Jackson fan, said she considers Murray responsible for the pop icon's death. "I miss everything about him," she said of Jackson.
Beatrice Fakhrain, a Los Angeles sports agent, said she supported Murray because "he's a good man, … a brilliant cardiologist."
If convicted, Murray faces a maximum sentence of four years. A recent change in state law means Murray could serve his time, if any, in a Los Angeles County facility rather than a state penitentiary.
If found innocent, Murray still could face license revocation investigations by the medical boards in the four states where he holds licenses — California, Nevada, Texas and Hawaii.
Court public information officials said jurors won't hold a news conference at the courthouse after any verdict. Jackson family members could comment outside the building, the officials said. The district attorney's office said prosecutors might comment after a conviction but would make no statement if Murray is acquitted.
